Grade 12 books:
Physics terms and their meanings
1. Acceleration
- Definition: The rate of change of velocity of an object over time.
- Example: A car increasing its speed from 0 to 60 km/h is accelerating.
2. Force
- Definition: A push or pull acting on an object, which can cause it to change its velocity (accelerate).
- Example: Gravity pulling a ball down after it’s thrown up is a force.
3. Energy
- Definition: The capacity to do work or cause physical change; comes in different forms like kinetic, potential, thermal, etc.
- Example: The energy stored in a compressed spring is potential energy.
4. Kinetic Energy
- Definition: The energy an object possesses due to its motion.
- Example: A moving car has kinetic energy.
5. Potential Energy
- Definition: The energy stored in an object due to its position or arrangement.
- Example: A rock at the top of a hill has gravitational potential energy.
6. Momentum
- Definition: The quantity of motion an object has, calculated as the product of its mass and velocity.
- Example: A fast-moving truck has greater momentum than a slow-moving car of the same mass.
7. Power
- Definition: The rate at which work is done or energy is transferred.
- Example: Power is measured in watts; a light bulb using 60 watts of power transfers 60 joules of energy per second.
8. Velocity
- Definition: The speed of an object in a specific direction.
- Example: A car moving north at 60 km/h has a velocity of 60 km/h north.
9. Newton's Laws of Motion
- Definition: Three fundamental laws describing the relationship between a body and the forces acting on it.
- First Law: An object remains at rest or in uniform motion unless acted on by a force.
- Second Law: Force is equal to mass times acceleration (F = ma).
- Third Law: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
10. Gravity
- Definition: A force of attraction between two masses; on Earth, it gives weight to physical objects.
- Example: Gravity pulls objects towards the center of Earth, making them fall when dropped.
11. Frequency
- Definition: The number of waves that pass a given point in one second, measured in hertz (Hz).
- Example: A sound wave with a frequency of 440 Hz is the pitch of the musical note A.
12. Wavelength
- Definition: The distance between successive peaks of a wave.
- Example: The wavelength of visible light determines its color.
13. Refraction
- Definition: The bending of a wave as it passes from one medium to another with a different density.
- Example: Light bending when it passes through water is due to refraction.
14. Work
- Definition: The energy transferred to an object by a force that causes it to move, calculated as force times distance (W = F × d).
- Example: Lifting a book off the floor requires work.
15. Electric Current
- Definition: The flow of electric charge, usually measured in amperes (A).
- Example: The current flowing through a circuit when you turn on a light.
16. Voltage
- Definition: The difference in electric potential energy per unit charge between two points in a circuit.
- Example: Batteries supply voltage that drives current through a circuit.
17. Resistance
- Definition: The opposition to the flow of electric current, measured in ohms (Ω).
- Example: Electrical devices, like resistors, limit the current in a circuit.
18. Thermodynamics
- Definition: The study of heat, energy, and work, and how they interact.
- First Law: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed.
- Second Law: Heat flows from hot to cold.
- Third Law: As temperature approaches absolute zero, entropy (disorder) approaches a minimum.
19. Quantum Mechanics
- Definition: A branch of physics dealing with the behavior of particles on very small scales, where the laws of classical physics don’t apply.
- Example: Quantum mechanics explains phenomena like the behavior of electrons in atoms.
