🔐OpenAI makes its first cybersecurity investment to combat AI-driven social engineering
OpenAI has made its first cybersecurity investment by co-leading a $43 million Series A funding round for Adaptive Security, a startup specializing in simulating AI-generated social engineering attacks. Adaptive Security’s platform trains employees to recognize threats like deepfake voice calls, phishing texts, and spoofed emails. This move underscores OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing defenses against the misuse of generative AI technologies.

🧠Brain implant turns patient’s thoughts into speech
Scientists from UC Berkeley and UCSF have developed a brain-computer interface that converts a person’s thoughts into speech — without the need to physically attempt making sounds.
The breakthrough has given back the ability to express thoughts to a 47-year-old woman who lost her speech due to a stroke 20 years ago.
A special neural network decodes the patient’s thoughts. During training, she mentally repeated 100 sentences composed of 1000 words.
Using a predictive interpretation method, researchers achieved a speech speed 8 times faster than other existing approaches.
Despite the progress, much work remains before the method can be considered clinically viable.

🔪The UK is developing an algorithm to identify potential murderers
The British government is working on the Homicide Prediction Project, aimed at identifying individuals most likely to commit murder.
Researchers are expected to use algorithms to analyze data on thousands of people, including crime victims, in an effort to pinpoint those at risk of committing serious violent offenses.
The Ministry of Justice hopes the project will enhance public safety. However, there are critics in the country who call the initiative “chilling and dystopian.”

⏳OpenAI has shortened the time for security checks of new models.
According to the Financial Times, OpenAI employees now have only a few days to assess the risks of new AI models, compared to the months it used to take.
In order to maintain its competitive edge, the company is focusing on releasing models faster, without dedicating as much time and resources to their evaluation.

🤯AI startup used Filipinos instead of AI
The U.S. Department of Justice has charged the founder and CEO of the startup Nate with fraud. The company had promised to automate online shopping with artificial intelligence.
Nate claimed that users could shop on any website with a single click thanks to AI. However, it was later revealed that purchases were actually made manually by contractors working in call centers in the Philippines.
Nate was founded in 2018 and raised over $50 million in investments. By 2023, the company had run out of money and was forced to sell off all its assets.

⚡️OpenAI introduces user verification for API access
OpenAI may now grant access to its most advanced models via API only after the user completes identity verification. To pass it, users must present a government-issued ID from a country where OpenAI provides its services.
Identity verification won’t be required for all users — some will still be able to access the new models without it.

🚦Hackers replaced Silicon Valley crosswalk voices with AI imitations of Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg
Hackers in Silicon Valley manipulated pedestrian crosswalk systems to play AI-generated voices resembling Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. While the impersonations were reportedly humorous and not malicious, the incident raised serious concerns about public infrastructure vulnerabilities and the misuse of AI-generated content in real-world settings. Authorities are investigating the breach.
