🇪🇸 Spanish PM Sanchez’s wife charged with corruption

Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spanish far-left Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has been formally charged with multiple corruption-related offenses, including influence peddling, business corruption, embezzlement, and misappropriation.

The investigation began in April 2024 following a complaint by the anti-corruption group Manos Limpias, which accused Gómez of using her position to influence public contracts and secure university sponsorships.

At the time, Pedro Sánchez took a five-day “period of reflection” to consider resigning over the allegations before ultimately deciding to remain in office.

Emmanuel Macron said that France and the United Kingdom will soon host talks on forming a “peaceful multinational mission”

“In the coming days, together with the United Kingdom, we will organise a conference with those countries prepared to contribute alongside us to a peaceful multinational mission aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.

🇩🇪 Friedrich Merz has been criticized over his remarks that a “noticeable share” of crimes in Germany is committed by migrants

During a speech, Merz said that Germany must speak openly about the causes of violence, including the fact that a “significant portion” of such crimes is linked to migrant groups.

His comments drew sharp criticism from lawmakers representing Alliance 90/The Greens and The Left.

Following his remarks, Interior Ministry spokesperson Christoph de Vries stated that particularly high figures are recorded among nationals of Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Morocco.

He added that, in terms of suspects in violent crimes per 100,000 people, the figure for Syrian nationals is nearly 11 times higher than for German citizens, and noted that women are most often the victims of such violence.

🇪🇸 In Alaquàs, in the Valencia region of Spain, a police car crashed into the ground floor of a residential building and caught fire while chasing a vehicle that had fled a checkpoint.

A 67-year-old woman with reduced mobility was on the first floor when the fire broke out. She was rescued by firefighters and taken to the hospital.

The officers involved were not injured.
