Finance Ministers Visit SPHMMC’s New Medical Facilities Under Construction

The Ethiopian Minister of Finance, H.E. Ahmed Shide, together with H.E. Dr. Eyob Tekalign, State Minister of Fiscal Policy and Public Finance, visited St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) to visited SPHMMC to learn about the new specialty centers being built.

The delegation was received by H.E. Dr. Mekdes Daba, Minister of Health, along with Dr. Muluken Tesfaye, Provost of SPHMMC, and Dr. Lemi Belay, Vice Provost for Medical Services and Acadamic .

During the visit, the Ministers toured specialized centers under development, including the Cardiac Center, the Gastrointestinal (GI) Center, and the Oncology Center. These centers are designed to provide advanced, high-standard medical care that will greatly strengthen Ethiopia’s capacity for specialized health services.

The discussions held between the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Health, and SPHMMC leadership emphasized the importance of aligning financial strategies with the hospital’s future role in delivering world-class healthcare. The visit also enabled the Finance Ministry to gain a deeper understanding of the institution’s growing capacity and its significance in advancing the country’s medical service standards.

This milestone was made possible with the support of Dr. Theofanie Mela (Boston) and Dr. Joseph Galvin (Ireland), both renowned electrophysiologists — who generously shared their expertise with our team.

SPHMMC Inaugurates Center of Excellence in Reproductive Health
St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) inaugurated its Center of Excellence in Reproductive Health, marking a historic milestone in advancing women’s and girls’ health in Ethiopia.

The inauguration was attended by members of the House of Representatives of the FDRE, H.E. Dr. Mekdes Daba, Minister of Health, state ministers of ministry health, and distinguished partners. The college was honored by the presence of Professor Senayt Fisseha, Vice President for Global Programs at the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, who joined as the honorary special guest.

The event highlighted the leadership of Dr. Muluken Tesfaye, Provost of SPHMMC, who emphasized the significance of the center as a hub of excellence for reproductive health. 
 Dr. Muluken Tesfaye extended heartfelt thanks to Professor Senayt Fisseha for her unwavering support, which has been invaluable to the establishment and growth of the center.
Professor Dilayhu, Director of the Center, presented the journey of the institution, which began a decade ago in small rooms and has now grown into a nationally and regionally recognized center providing research, advanced training, and patient care.

Professor Senayt Fisseha highlighted the center’s vital role in reducing preventable maternal deaths and strengthening women’s health services, while also recognizing its growing role as a training hub for Ethiopia and Africa.

In her keynote address, Dr. Mekdes Daba, Minister of Health, reaffirmed the government’s priority to expand such centers to regional states in the years to come, emphasizing reproductive health as a key focus area for national development. She also acknowledged Professor Senayt Fisseha’s continued contributions to the success of the center.

Finally, the college presented a special award of recognition to individuals and partner organizations whose dedication and support have been instrumental in the establishment and success of the Center of Excellence in Reproductive Health.

With this inauguration, SPHMMC reinforced its commitment to excellence in women’s health, research, and education, setting a benchmark for reproductive health services in Ethiopia and across Africa.
