Seen in relation to the previous discussions, absurdism neither denies the challenge identified by nihilism nor fully resolves it through existential construction. It remains in the space between certainty and abandonment. Some find this position uncomfortable because it offers no ultimate reassurance. Others find in it a peculiar form of intellectual integrity. It allows one to admit that existence may not conform to the expectations of human reason while still affirming that the act of living can be approached with seriousness, attentiveness and even quiet courage If nihilism reveals the collapse of inherited meaning and existentialism emphasizes the responsibility of shaping a life, absurdism reminds us that the search itself may never reach final closure. Yet this unfinished condition doesn't prevent depth. It may even be what makes reflection possible at all. The absence of final answers doesn't silence thought..it keeps thought awake ! Across these three reflections we have encountered three different responses to the same persistent question. Nihilism confronts us with the possibility that meaning is not guaranteed by the structure of the universe. Existentialism responds by emphasizing the role of human responsibility in shaping a life that can express coherence even in the absence of certainty. Absurdism finally reminds us that the tension between the desire for explanation and the silence of the world may never fully disappear Taken together these perspectives don't form a single doctrine nor do they resolve the question of meaning once and for all. Instead they reveal something about the condition in which reflection itself becomes possible. Human beings ask questions not only because answers exist but because awareness itself seeks orientation. Whether meaning is discovered, constructed or continually negotiated, the search seems inseparable from the experience of being conscious of one’s own existence Perhaps the most important insight is not that one of these positions must be accepted completely but that each exposes a different dimension of the same difficulty. The absence of absolute certainty doesn't prevent thought, and uncertainty doesn't eliminate the seriousness with which life can be lived. Even without final resolution, reflection continues, decisions are made, commitments are formed and significance gradually becomes visible through participation in the world The question of meaning, it seems doesn't conclude easily. Absurdism

For the last two days we spent time with two ideas that stand very close to the question of meaning. We began with nihilism, the unsettling thought that the universe doesn't seem to contain any built-in purpose waiting for us to discover it. Then we moved to existentialism where thinkers argued that even if meaning isn't given in advance, human beings still possess the strange capacity to shape their lives through choice, responsibility and commitment. Today we arrive at the final point in this small journey: absurdism perhaps the most honest description of how meaning feels when the human need for clarity meets a world that does not explain itself Absurdism is most strongly associated with Albert Camus especially in his essay The Myth of Sisyphus. Camus noticed something simple but disturbing: human beings naturally ask questions about purpose, justice and direction yet the universe does not appear to answer in the language we expect. We search for reasons but reality offers events. We look for moral symmetry but history shows contingency. We hope that existence forms a coherent narrative yet experience often feels fragmented. The Absurd is born precisely in this confrontation between the mind that longs for meaning and the silence that seems to surround it Camus didn't claim that life is meaningless in the careless sense sometimes associated with nihilism. His point is more subtle. The Absurd appears when we recognize that our desire for final explanation may never be completely satisfied. Reason can describe the structure of the world but it can't guarantee that existence itself must justify its presence. The universe doesn't promise that suffering will be balanced, that virtue will be rewarded or that every story will resolve. Yet the absence of guarantee doesn't eliminate the intensity of living. In fact it may sharpen it ! To explain this camus turned to the Greek image of Sisyphus condemned to push a stone up a mountain only for it to roll down again. The story seems designed to express futility. Nothing permanent is achieved. Nothing final is secured. Yet Camus imagines Sisyphus conscious of his condition and still continuing the movement upward. The dignity of the act doesn't come from success but from awareness. Even when no cosmic justification is offered, the act of living remains undeniably real. One continues to think, to create, to love, to question. The Absurd doesn't destroy these activities it removes the illusion that they require metaphysical permission This position stands close to existentialism yet preserves a certain tension. Existentialists such as Jean Paul Sartre emphasized the freedom to construct meaning through choice. Camus was more cautious about claiming that meaning can simply be invented as one invents a story. He believed the conflict itself should remain visible. The human longing for clarity does not disappear and the world does not suddenly begin to explain itself. The value lies in remaining intellectually honest without collapsing into despair. One neither escapes into comforting illusion nor abandons the seriousness of living Absurdism therefore describes a way of inhabiting uncertainty without pretending it has been solved. It recognizes that the desire for ultimate answers may exceed what experience can confirm yet it refuses the conclusion that life must therefore become empty. Instead attention turns toward the immediate texture of existence: the presence of consciousness, the reality of relationships, the quiet persistence of curiosity. Meaning becomes less like a final destination and more like a practice of engagement. 3/2 Yesterday we began with nihilism the unsettling realization that the universe does not appear to offer a ready - made explanation for why human life matters. Today we turn to existentialism a philosophical movement that does not attempt to reconstruct lost certainty instead asks what becomes possible once certainty is no longer assumed. When inherited structures no longer function as unquestioned foundations, the individual does not suddenly become free in a simple sense; rather one becomes aware of the strange fact that life is already in motion. One is already choosing, already responding, already forming habits of attention and avoidance before any final theory of existence has been secured. Philosophy at this point begins to feel less like distant speculation and more like an attempt to understand what we are already doing Existentialism developed within a Europe undergoing profound transformation. Scientific developments altered humanity’s understanding of nature, industrialization reshaped social rhythms and political upheavals exposed the fragility of institutions once considered stable. Revolutions and wars did not simply produce new borders they disrupted confidence in inherited explanations of moral order. Many individuals continued to live within traditional frameworks yet something in the background had shifted. Familiar ideas still existed but their authority felt less automatic, as if they required a new kind of participation in order to remain convincing. The existentialist doesn't necessarily celebrate this shift neither does he ignore it. The question becomes how a person lives when intellectual security is no longer quietly guaranteed by the surrounding culture One of the most influential articulations of this situation appears in the work of Jean - Paul Sartre who described human beings as «condemned to be free» the phrase can sound exaggerated until one begins to consider its implication. Sartre’s claim that existence precedes essence suggests that human beings don't enter the world already defined in the way an object is defined by its design. A tool is produced according to a plan a human life, by contrast, gradually acquires direction through countless small acts of acceptance, resistance, hesitation and decision. Identity rarely appears as a finished structure. It accumulates through repeated orientations toward the world. Even minor choices what one continues despite difficulty, what one abandons too quickly, what one defends in conversation, what one avoids thinking about participate in shaping a recognizable self over time Such freedom rarely feels light. The absence of an unquestionable external structure does not eliminate responsibility; in some ways it makes responsibility more visible. Existentialist philosophy treats the anxiety connected with this realization as meaningful rather than pathological. One senses that choices matter yet no perfectly neutral method exists for determining in advance what one must become. The discomfort is not merely emotional; it arises from the awareness that life cannot be lived entirely as observation. Even indecision leaves traces. Avoidance also shapes character. A person may delay commitment for years only to discover that the delay itself has quietly become a commitment to a certain way of existing Although existentialism is frequently associated with atheistic thought, its deeper concern extends beyond the question of belief alone. Earlier figures such as Soren kierkegaard had already explored the inward dimension of responsibility, emphasizing that truth becomes existentially significant when it is lived rather than merely affirmed abstractly. Kierkegaard understood that certainty does not always precede commitment. In some cases, commitment clarifies what previously appeared uncertain. Individuals often recognize the seriousness of their beliefs only when those beliefs begin to influence how they endure difficulty, how they remain loyal or how they respond to disappointment that can't be easily explained

Existential thought therefore does not imply that values are invented without constraint. Commitments gain depth through continuity, especially when circumstances change or enthusiasm weakens. A friendship maintained through misunderstanding, a principle defended when it becomes inconvenient, a responsibility accepted without external pressure these experiences gradually give visible form to what a person considers meaningful. Significance doesn't always arrive dramatically. More often it becomes perceptible through patterns that only reveal their coherence in retrospect. A life can appear fragmented while it is being lived and yet show a certain direction when viewed across time For this reason existentialist philosophy frequently turns toward literature, biography and concrete situations rather than remaining confined to technical argument alone. Questions concerning meaning are difficult to isolate from the texture of lived reality. Decisions concerning work, loyalty, honesty, forgiveness and perseverance aren't decorative illustrations added to philosophical reflection; they are places where reflection either becomes embodied or remains incomplete. Existentialism often appears less like a closed doctrine and more like an insistence that life is responsive to the seriousness with which it is approached. Some ideas remain abstract until they encounter resistance in actual experience Freedom in this context can't be understood as simple independence from others. Actions extend beyond the moment in which they occur, shaping expectations, relationships and possibilities that influence other lives. A promise alters the structure of the future. A betrayal does the same. Even private decisions can subtly affect the moral atmosphere shared with others. Responsibility therefore does not remain confined within the boundaries of the individual. Human beings participate often without fully noticing in constructing the environments within which future choices become easier or more difficult. The consequences of action rarely remain isolated Historically existentialism can be understood as one of the most serious philosophical responses to the crisis of meaning identified in nineteenth century thought. Rather than dismissing the problem introduced by nihilism, existential thinkers attempted to describe how significance might still emerge when certainty is limited. Their reflections don't promise complete resolution. Instead, they suggest that meaning develops through continued involvement with thought, creativity and responsibility even when intellectual reassurance feels incomplete. A life acquires weight gradually. Depth does not always appear where one first expects it Existentialism encourages a demanding form of honesty. Ambiguity persists yet ambiguity does not automatically dissolve commitment. Meaning becomes more visible where attention continues despite distraction, where effort remains present despite fatigue, where reflection gradually reshapes action. One begins to notice that the question of meaning changes its character once it becomes practical. Instead of searching only for an explanation of life, one becomes aware of participating in the formation of a life that expresses certain priorities more clearly than others If nihilism introduces the possibility that meaning is not guaranteed in advance, existentialism examines how meaning can take shape through sustained participation in the world. The question becomes less abstract over time. It begins to appear in decisions that once seemed minor, in responsibilities once postponed, in values that become recognizable only after they have been tested. Meaning is rarely encountered as a final answer. Instead he describes a posture of lucid persistence. One continues living, thinking, creating and loving even while recognizing that ultimate metaphysical guarantees may remain unavailable. Meaning survives not because the universe promises it but because human consciousness continues to care. We continue anyway ! Such reflections can be understood as part of a broader transformation in modern thought. As developments in cosmology, biology and historical criticism reduced the explanatory necessity of teleological interpretations of nature, questions of meaning gradually migrated from theology into philosophy, literature and psychology. The result was not uniform pessimism but intellectual diversification. Some thinkers reaffirmed religious traditions with renewed philosophical depth. Others developed secular humanist frameworks. Still others explored existential and tragic approaches to value. What unites these responses is the recognition that certainty has become more difficulty yet seriousness has not disappeared The deepest strength of this perspective lies in recognizing that significance does not require cosmic endorsement in order to be experienced as real. A piece of music does not lose its beauty because the universe does not provide an official explanation of aesthetics. An act of kindness does not become meaningless because it lacks metaphysical certification. Thought, art, friendship, curiosity and moral concern arise within human life and exert genuine influence on conscious experience. Their reality may be phenomenological rather than cosmological yet this does not make them trivial. It makes them fragile and therefore important In this way the confrontation with nihilism can become an invitation to intellectual maturity. It refuses easy guarantees yet it also refuses resignation. It acknowledges that ultimate foundations may remain uncertain, yet uncertainty does not prevent seriousness, depth, or commitment. Meaning from this perspective is neither passively received nor simply invented at whim it gradually emerges through participation in the world, through the continuous interaction between reflective awareness and concrete existence. Such meaning may not be eternal in the theological sense, yet it can still possess coherence, dignity, and depth. What earlier centuries experienced as metaphysical stability begins, under the light of modern inquiry, to appear less like self - evident truth and more like the continuity of tradition. Scientific explanation doesn't necessarily destroy meaning but it removes the assumption that meaning is guaranteed in advance by cosmic design. Nothing is promised ! Within this intellectual climate, the diagnosis associated with Friedrich nietzsche becomes historically understandable. When Nietzsche wrote that «God is dead» he wasn't simply expressing disbelief nor celebrating the victory of atheism. He was describing a cultural transformation taking place in Europe a gradual erosion of shared metaphysical foundations that had long grounded morality, truth and purpose. His statement was intended less as a triumph than as a warning. Nietzsche feared that if the highest values of a civilization lose their unquestioned authority, individuals may find themselves in a condition where meaning appears unstable, negotiable, perhaps even arbitrary. Nihilism in this sense isn't merely the belief that nothing matters; it is the experience of discovering that previously trusted sources of value no longer possess automatic legitimacy Yet nihilism doesn't logically require despair. The realization that the universe doesn't impose a predetermined purpose doesn't immediately imply that human life must therefore feel empty. It simply removes the assumption that meaning exists independently of human participation. Something changes here responsibility moves inward not as comfort but as necessity If meaning is not dictated in advance by cosmic structure, then human beings are not limited to discovering value as if it were an object hidden somewhere in the universe. Meaning begins to appear instead as something shaped through interpretation, commitment, creativity and lived experience. This shift does not eliminate difficulty. It deepens it. Human beings become in part responsible for the seriousness of their own existence This perspective resonates with themes in existentialist philosophy, especially in the work of Jean - Paul Sartre who argued that human beings first exist and only later define themselves through their actions. Values, in this view, are not discovered fully formed within the structure of reality they are gradually articulated through decisions, relationships and sustained commitments.
