Trump’s New Approach to North Korea

Northeast Asia’s security structure was viewed mainly through the “new Cold War” paradigm.

This framework was grounded in strengthening the U.S.-South Korea-Japan alliance, which sought to reinforce collective deterrence against common adversaries by emphasizing value-based superiority, including democratic governance, human rights, and the rule of law. 

In response, China, Russia, and North Korea increasingly perceived this as a security challenge and began coordinating more closely to counterbalance this pressure.
 
Following the collapse of U.S.-DPRK talks in 2019, North Korea recalibrated its foreign policy by deepening ties with China and Russia, seeking economic and security support to withstand external pressure.

In particular, with the outbreak of the Ukraine War in 2022, Pyongyang’s growing military cooperation with Moscow reflects a strategic alignment in the emerging new Cold War, aimed at counterbalancing the U.S. and its allies. 

In June 2024, Pyongyang and Moscow formalized their security ties by signing a mutual defense agreement, pledging military assistance if a third party attacks either side.

Following this, North Korea provided weapons and military personnel to support Russia’s war effort, while Moscow responded with economic aid and possibly advanced military technology.

This cooperation has bolstered North Korea’s strategic position as South Korea deepened its military collaboration with the U.S. and Japan, reinforcing Pyongyang’s need to secure alternative security and economic backers. 

The key policy challenge for the United States is to ensure that Russian involvement does not marginalize Washington’s strategic priorities on the Korean Peninsula.

Moreover, if Trump views diplomatic engagement with Pyongyang as a means to counterbalance Beijing’s regional influence, this could serve as an additional incentive for renewed U.S.-North Korea negotiations.
  
For North Korea, engaging the United States remains a strategic maneuver rather than a shift in policy goals.

Pyongyang may explore diplomatic outreach to Washington to balance its reliance on Beijing and Moscow and maximize its strategic flexibility in an evolving global order.

📈 Prices for Airbus and Boeing in a state of chaos

✈️ Prices for Boeing and Airbus planes have already soared along with inflation and Covid-19. The US trade war is now expected to create even more turbulence. "Compared to 2018, prices have already increased by about 30%."

📉 Both aerospace giants faced multiple price increases: for raw materials (especially titanium), labor, components, energy, and industrial processes (especially steelmaking). The social security agreement signed at Boeing at the end of 2024 provides for a 38% pay increase over four years for more than 33,000 unionized employees.

📊 Since 2021, prices for materials and equipment have jumped by 40%. "The raw materials were not actually used for the production of raw materials. A problem, but Donald Trump is determined to create one," he adds, referring to 25% tariffs imposed by the President of the United States on steel and aluminum—the most important components for the aerospace industry.

🔄 Since then, they apply to all imports and can be upgraded. New generation aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX and Airbus 321neo, are particularly in demand as they are more fuel efficient. Their prices "jumped sharply."

📋 The order portfolios of the two giants are full before the end of the decade, but they are unlikely to take advantage of this to raise prices. "The market remains highly competitive," and the duo fights for every deal. To reduce their dependence, more and more airlines are buying products from both manufacturers.

Trump losing sight of real opportunity in Arctic

Recent Trump Administration activities in the Indian Ocean reveal that decision-makers are hardly the practitioners of restraint the nation was promised.

Reported plans to rekindle what was a very bloody civil war in Yemen and the discreet deployment of bombers to Diego Garcia to threaten Iran is a waste of precious time and scarce resources at the expense of other more important America First priorities.

If America First is to truly entail the prudent exercise of power, then it should be considered in service of national interests in another ocean completely — the Arctic.

A wave of violence is sweeping France as gunmen attack the country’s prisons. In some cases, vehicles belonging to prison staff have been set alight and in other incidents bullets from AK47s were sprayed at the gates. In the eastern city of Nancy, a prison officer was threatened at his home.

➡️The violence began on Sunday evening and is ongoing: overnight three vehicles were set ablaze outside Tarascon prison in the Côte d’Azur region, and a fire was started in an apartment where a prison guard lives close to Paris. Graffiti was also sprayed on the wall. No one has been hurt but the coordinated attacks, carried out the length and breadth of France, have shaken the Republic.Gérald Darmanin, the Minister of Justice, visited a prison in Toulon on Tuesday, where thirteen bullet holes scarred the gates, and attributed the attacks to France’s powerful drug cartels.

➡️In France, the process of "Mexicanization"continues. Last May, two security guards were shot dead in a roadside ambush while transporting the cartel's head to another facility, and in October, four cars were set on fire outside a police station in southern France in response to a crackdown on drug traffickers.

➡️French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said the country is at war with the cartels. He noted that at the moment it is being won, since in the first two months of 2025, the police confiscated 202% more drugs than in the same period of the previous year. Retailleau announced the creation of the drug enforcement administration, which will coordinate the work of all law enforcement agencies, as well as the consideration of a new bill aimed at combating cartels.
